Sandarac 2.0 Varnish is a micro filtered 100% pure sandarac resin varnish with a slower drying solvent system.

Benefits of Sandarac 2.0

  • A longer open time for pouring, draining and blotting.  This eliminates the common far edge drying to a matte finish
  • Allows for the plate to be placed flat for a minute before heating.  This lets the varnish level and eliminates edge rollback lines.
  • Uniform high gloss finish
  • Safe solvents - Safer than the base 95% pure ethanol
  • Can be used at room temperature without heating the plate before pouring
  • Less sensitive to heat and humidity variations
  • Easier to get good results verses a traditional all ethanol varnish

Used for Tintypes, Ambrotypes, and Glass Negatives.

Heat your big plates and filter before use

While I appreciate the revolutionary idea of this varnish it just didn't live up to the quality I've come to expect from UV Photographics. I was able to successfully varnish smaller plates without preheating them, but when trying it on an 8x10, the varnish went matte and turned kind of blue; not a good look. Preheating the subsequent 8x10 plate took care of the problem and gave me the nice glossy coat you'd expect. So I'd suggest treating this as a normal sandarac varnish. The other reason for the low star rating is that my plates were full of specs as if the varnish hadn't been properly filtered before bottling. I thought it was something on my end until another photographer relayed they had the same problem. I've never had that happen with any commercial varnish. Overall disappointed.
