Description

Introducing No. Z - A New Salted Collodion from the Result of Years of Experimentation and Research.

No. Z is the result of extensive research conducted over several years to uncover the intricate interactions between the components in salted collodion and the properties they contribute. This combined with research unavailable during the prominence of wet plate collodion has revealed the strengths and weaknesses of various formulas. UV Photographics has harnessed this knowledge to create a superior collodion with desirable properties that wet plate photographers seek: speed, tonality, stability, cleanliness, ease of pouring, and ease of development.

Photographers prioritize different qualities in collodion, but a slow, unstable, and flat formula is not what most shooters are seeking. No. Z addresses these concerns and offers a range of benefits that will elevate your wet plate collodion experience:

Fast: No. Z surpasses UVP-X by +1/3 stop, ensuring faster exposure times making it easier to get the shot and look you want.

Stable: This collodion maintains its speed and strength for an extended period of 12-18 months, providing consistent results over time.

Tonality: Ideal for capturing striking portraits, No. Z excels when used with strobes or natural lighting, resulting in captivating images.

    No. Z

I have been running a busy tintype studio for over 10 years, averaging 2000 plates per year, always mixing my own collodion, and I'm blown away by this stuff. The shelf life is incredible. When I first made the switch, I ordered a bottle of Z, shot some plates with it and then sat it in the fridge for over six months to see how stable it was. When I shot with it again, it was like shooting with fresh collodion. The variance in ISO/contrast day to day is basically non existent. I no longer make my own collodion. No more having to perfectly time the mix so that it's ripened in time for a shoot. No more dealing with bad batches of ether/collodion ruining my mix. No more running out of collodion after a shoot goes long. No more decanting to avoid sediment. I swear that it's also less damaging to the silver bath. I have been shooting with X/Z for over a year now and I've had far fewer silver bath breakdowns than I normally would. It's fast too. How much faster than my own recipe is debatable, but the stability of the product is the main selling point for me - it allows me to keep a full bottle in reserve so that I always have inventory on hand and ready to shoot. I have found both Z and X to be very versatile too. Both are great for strobe work and wonderful in natural light, if even a little fast. I feel spoiled that such a product exists. Highly recommend!

    UVP-Z Colldion

Posted by Michael Boatright on Nov 12th 2023

I first ordered a bottle of UVP-Z on the recommendation of a friend. Was using Old Work Horse previously. Although I have not done scientific tests yet myself, I would dispute other’s results that it is 1-2 stops faster than OWH. It seems at least 1 stop faster for me. The amazing thing is, two months after mixing, it was the same color and potency as the day I opened the bottle. No reddening at all. Jusyt got my second bottle.

Just beautiful! Still learning this new formula, but so far I find incredible tone, easy development, and fast speed. Thanks Brian?
