Description

Double Carbon Treated Shellac based varnish used for Tintypes, Ambrotypes, and Glass Negatives.

This varnish is made with the lightest shellac flakes available, with a small amount of sandarac resin added for smoothness. The dissolved resin is DOUBLE carbon treated and micro filtered to remove as much additional color and impurities as possible. Only pure 95% ethanol is used to ensure that no harsh denaturants harm the image during the most dreaded step of the wet plate process.  The resin, alcohol and steam distilled French lavender oil are balanced so that the varnish can be applied at room temperature, then heated to dry.

One of the main advantages of this varnish is that the final coating is harder and dries faster than sandarac.  This means that post varnishing the surface is less likely to be scratched.  The durability and light color makes for beautifully protected plates.

    The best for nearly clear

Posted by D. Anson Brody on Apr 17th 2024

This stuff is incredible. If I hand burnish my plates, and pour off into a second bottle I get very bright and near clear results. If I don’t burnish plates look more similar to when plates are wet. Both are great looks. This stuff is easy to flow on a plate too. Great product, #1 recommendation.

    Ultra Pale

Posted by Mark Cornelison on Oct 8th 2023

I was not very good at the lacquer phase at all, but this lacquer is a little more forgiving, and doesn’t seem to be as dark a lacquer as some of the Sandaracs! I recommend it!

    So fresh and so Clear-Clear

Prefer the tone of this varnish to sandarac- highly recommend reading Brian’s varnish blog/instructions or watching the video he made as his indications differ from traditional sandarac varnishing methods. Awesome as always, thank you!

    Pale shellac

Posted by Mark Cornelison on Mar 6th 2023

This was my first time using the ultra pale shellac and I like it a lot. I like the other shellac also but I’d like the ultra pale since it doesn’t have the yellowish tint. Excited to see how they dry!

    Ultra Pale Shellac Varnish

I couldn't love the Ultra Pale Shellac more. It is perfect for plates that are either perfectly exposed or a bit under. I love that it can be pored at room temperature. I highly recommend it!
