Description

Double Carbon Treated Shellac based varnish used for Tintypes, Ambrotypes, and Glass Negatives.

This varnish is made with the lightest shellac flakes available, with a small amount of sandarac resin added for smoothness. The dissolved resin is DOUBLE carbon treated and micro filtered to remove as much additional color and impurities as possible. Only pure 95% ethanol is used to ensure that no harsh denaturants harm the image during the most dreaded step of the wet plate process.  The resin, alcohol and steam distilled French lavender oil are balanced so that the varnish can be applied at room temperature, then heated to dry.

One of the main advantages of this varnish is that the final coating is harder and dries faster than sandarac.  This means that post varnishing the surface is less likely to be scratched.  The durability and light color makes for beautifully protected plates.

No other shellac or varnish compares, hands down.

    Favorite Shellac

Posted by Liz on Mar 29th 2021

After struggling with huge ridges from sandarac, I made the switch to shellac. I tried the light shellac originally because the UP was sold out, but now that I've tried this one it's my new favorite. It flows super evenly and doesn't darken the image so it doesn't even look as if there's varnish on it. And no more flow back edge, the best.
