Description

Double Carbon Treated Shellac based varnish used for Tintypes, Ambrotypes, and Glass Negatives.

This varnish is made with the lightest shellac flakes available, with a small amount of sandarac resin added for smoothness. The dissolved resin is DOUBLE carbon treated and micro filtered to remove as much additional color and impurities as possible. Only pure 95% ethanol is used to ensure that no harsh denaturants harm the image during the most dreaded step of the wet plate process.  The resin, alcohol and steam distilled French lavender oil are balanced so that the varnish can be applied at room temperature, then heated to dry.

One of the main advantages of this varnish is that the final coating is harder and dries faster than sandarac.  This means that post varnishing the surface is less likely to be scratched.  The durability and light color makes for beautifully protected plates.

    WOW!

Posted by Maxine on Sep 24th 2019

I posted about this when I ordered it, and I had a few veteran tintypists reach out to tell me how much they love it. I understood once I used it. There’s no reason to use anything different TBH. This formula is thin, which makes it nearly fool proof. No varnish ridges. Which I admit I’m prone to. My plates hardly look varnished which is exactly what I’m looking for. I want my plates to look the way they look once they dry out of the wash. Just silver on aluminum. No yellow tint and I don’t have to compensate my exposure knowing that I’ll end up varnishing. This stuff is gold. (Very clear, pale gold.)

    Good Stuff

Goes on the plate nicely and leaves a beautiful glossy finish. Compared to sandarac it leaves an almost colorless finish. It also has a much fainter aroma. If you like to use a pour spout with your varnish bottle, be advised that the narrow bottle opening doesn't accommodate a standard sized spout, so you'll have to transfer the varnish to another bottle that can.

    Lightest shellac available!

Love this shellac. Easy to use, smells great, also by far the lightest shellac I have ever tried, and I’ve tried lots, including making my own! This is the one product I will buy pre-made, and it’s totally worth it.

    Best Shellac

This is the best shellac on the planet, I no longer have to compensate with my exposures to account for the darkening of varnish.
