UVP X is a modern collodion formula developed for speed, long life, tonal range, and usability.  It is used for making for tintypes, ambrotypes, and glass negatives. UVP X is a cadmium-based formula that ages slowly, so you will have consistent results over a long period of time. Stored in a cool dark place, this collodion will maintain good working properties for 6-12 months.

UVP X is specifically formulated with a slightly higher bromide ratio, which aids in achieving good tonal range in portraits. Also, it is easy to see the image during development, which helps achieve the most from the collodion. It’s the fastest of the super stable formulas (Lea Formula 3, UVP-4, UVP-X).

My go-to collodion for wet plate tintype studio portraits

Posted by Chad Drake on Jun 29th 2025

I have had excellent results with this collodion X. I like keeping it on hand and I take comfort knowing it has a longer usable shelf life than others. And I love knowing that nothing is sacrificed to have that longer usable shelf life.

My go to collodion. Good contrast, not too slow. Nice range of tones.

Love this collodion. I recently started experimenting with strobes and have been so happy with the results using no. X. Big thanks to uvp for making the chemistry easy for new wet platers like myself!

This collodion is well worth the money and let's you focus on all the other aspects of wet plate. It works great and retains its sensitivity for a long time.

    UVP-X collodion

Posted by John Berry on Feb 24th 2024

This is my go-to. I've been using it for several years and have never had a problem with it. And the shelf life is fantastic. It's never gotten too old for me to use, and I go on breaks from wetplate fairly often. Definitely 5 stars!!!
